Ryan
Baker is a senior financial analyst and field agent and serves as
Receiver on smaller cases that tend to be price sensitive.
At Mosier & Company, Ryan’s initial assignment was to corral the
Private Equity Management Group case – a billion dollar alleged Ponzi
scheme. This proved to be a fair test of Ryan’s abilities in the area
of quantitative evaluation and analysis. Ryan was tasked with tracing
$1 billion worth of investment from nine Investors over a ten year
period into a dozen PEMG investment vehicles located in the British
Virgin Islands that collectively had forty-six investment vehicles
called “tranches.” This overall investment includes over 50 assets and
275 life insurance policies; many of the assets were jointly owned by
multiple investors.
After tracking the PEMG investments into the tranches, it was then
necessary to determine current market values of the assets (as applied
to each Investor’s share). An important step in this process was
adjusting for inter-tranche activities (conducted by PEMG’s management
without the knowledge or concurrence of the Investors) including loans
between tranches and sale of assets between tranches (giving rise to
the Ponzi allegation). This required multiple, multi layer excel
worksheets of significant magnitude.
Balancing these formidable talents, Ryan has also managed the
financial affairs of $5 and $10 million companies that are the subject
of a dispute or insolvency for both real estate and operating
companies.
Ryan has an undergraduate degree from New York University in
Economics. He is a member of the California Receivers Forum and
attended Loyola IV – a three-day intensive educational program on the
A-Z of receivership co-sponsored by Loyola Law School and the
California Receivers Forum.
